Yi 4K+ Macro Video Recording
This is my first test for macro video recording with Yi 4K+ action camera.
I've recently done a lens hack modification so that I can set manual focus for the camera. I will be doing a how to video soon showing how to modify the Yi 4K+ for manual focus control of its lens. The lens modification should also work for the Yi Lite and all the Yi 4K range.
I recorded the footage in the Yi's highest resolution of 4000x3008 and then edited the footage in a 4K UHD Ultra High Definition project timeline of 3840x1634. This project resolution is to give the aspect ratio of 2.35:1 for UHD 4K, which is more common for film and cinema presentation. As opposed to the usual resolution of 3840x2160 and aspect ratio of 16:9 which is the standard for 4k UHD.
During the edit I zoomed in, or cropped in to, the original footage and re-framed it into the 2.35:1 project settings. This gives a 1:1 pixel re-mapping from the original footage to the output video resolution and means no pixel blending or processing or loss of optical resolution.
The picture has not been colour graded, so this is exactly how the Yi 4K+ shot the footage. Unfortunately, I do not have any of the rigging or hardware that would usually be used for macro photography or filming. So the shots are less than ideal as far as stability is concerned. Although there are points during the edit sequence where the focus is totally in and looks extremely good for such a small camera and lens.
In any event, the video should give a very good idea of what the Yi 4K+ is capable of with regard macro filming and manual focusing. I will also be doing other videos showing the benefit of manual focusing with the Yi, especially for setting critical focus for a fixed distance for vlogging, podcasting, youtube videos or any other use of the Yi where you are doing pieces to camera.
While I have great reservations over the Yi's audio performance, its video capabilities are awesome and in my opinion it is the best action camera available at the moment. I've owned and used the GoPro Hero5 Black & Hero6 Black, and can honestly say that aside from recording with external microphones, the Yi 4K+ is a better action camera.
The awesome music that I've used for the atmospheric score in the video is, The Theatrical Poster for Poltergeist III by Chris Zabriskie.
