Red Storm Gathering 07 | Attacking the Shallows... In a Submarine?
00:00 Start
Adams class DD was about to be hit by a wakehomer... Kaboom!
(Several days earlier...)
00:12 Hit a Trap
06-AUG-1984 0800L
We departed Murmansk toward the shallow waters of Copenhagen, but we ran into a NATO ASW group just north of Alta. We went flank to southwest and was able to disengage, only to hit a NATO underwater contact.
This turned out to be a British Valiant-class SSN, and we did the same: ran to the west and left it behind.
03:45 Shallow Waters
08-AUG-1984 0400L
We have arrived at the shallow waters of Copenhagen, where we are expecting some sort of... diesel-electric sub reception. We chose to load 2 decoys, 3 anti-ship torpedoes, and 3 anti-sub torpedoes. We'll send one torpedo each toward every target.
Both ESM and radar are absolutely quiet... Which helps as any contact would be the enemy... Except sonar couldn't detect anything.
06:18 Yankee Search
With no choice, we went active search, and found a contact to our south. (We are amused when we learned the Yanks call active sonar search "Yankee Search") We quickly ID'ed it as a Zwaardvis-class sub, and sent two torpedoes after it, and it was hit and sunk. We discovered a small freighter and also sank it, then disengaged.
12:20 New Assignment
08-AUG-1984 0400L
We got new orders to go back to Andoya to watch for another enemy sub dropping off commandos.
13:05 Assignment failed?
We were told that we were too late (again) despite doing our best.
Our new assignment is to hit a convoy heading to Trondheim.
14:30 Convoy Intercepted
11-AUG-1984 0200L
After playing hide-n-seek with multiple NATO contacts, we managed to intercept the convoy on the outskirts of Trondheim.
Looks like 3 escorts (Adams, Perry, and Spruance), and at least one freighter, coming right at us. Usually they are in a triangular pattern, with freighters in the middle. We waited as long as we could, and only when we are on the verge of being discovered, that we fired out anti-ship torpedo salvo, some for escorts, some for the ship in the middle. Then we found there are two ROROs next to each other.
We sank the Adams-class, and got 2 hits on a RORO, finally sinking her. The other is doing 23 kt and pulling away, with Spruance and Perry continuing to prosecute us, and we were hit at least once, cutting our speed to 10kt. We managed to limp away, after getting a hit on the Spruance and using all antiship torpedoes. As we did destroy 50% of the freighters, that's good enough for GLAVCOM.
We are heading back to Murmansk.
23:00 Home Sweet Home
11-AUG-1984 2300L
We arrived back at Murmansk, and I decided to ask for a transfer, as the K-181 seems to get hit every mission. However, we are a few prestige short to get a Victor I, so we had to settle for a Tango-class B-515... which at least have the new TEST-71M dual-purpose wire-guided torpedoes plus the older torpedoes (but only 1 control channel!)
Still, the new torpedoes should help us kill enemy subs, something the November had a hard time doing. Though our lack of speed would mean we will have a hard time evading or chasing down freighters. Still we will do what we must.
(Thus ended the 7th patrol. Stay tuned for the 8th patrol!)

Thumbnail: Sinking the Zwaardvis...
This will be my third attempt at the Soviet campaign. The year is 1984. After too many Yankee provocations, the Soviet Union had enough and declared war. The Soviet Army can take Europe, if the Soviet Navy can stop or at least slow the reinforcements reaching continental Europe from the US. And as a captain of a Soviet submarine, I will do my duty to the Motherland.
