The British Navy Oiler saw his escorts vanish one at a time. First the Knox-class frigate was sunk. Then the Seasprite helo vanished. Now even the P-3 Orion is gone. As he got no radio call about leaving due to bingo fuel, he can only assume it also met a grisly end.
And now it's his turn, as his lookout reported seeing a torpedo zigzaing in their wake and closing. He knew it's one of those Soviet wakehoming torpedoes, and he ordered EVERYONE to don survival gear, and evacuate the rear compartments...
Two days prior...
00:30 North of Murmansk...
14-JUL-1984 1700L
K-181 a November class SSN, under command of Kapitan-Leytnant Changov, has just left Murmansk with a full load of torpedoes with orders to intercept a NATO replenishment convoy leaving England, to Bergen, then to Lofoten Islands.
03:00 Intercepted
16-JUL-1984 0300L
S-118 did its best to avoid contact, and it managed to do so until it bumped into a NATO subsurface contact, but was able to disengage.
07:00 Intercepted again
This time, S-118 bumped into a NATO ASW group that scrambled out of Narvik. It is composed of a Type 21 and a Type 42, plus helo and P-3 Orion support. The ASW prosecuted S-118 for a while, but S-118 was able to sink the Type 21, in exchange of being hit twice, then both disengaged.
15:50 There you are...
We finally spotted the replenishment group / convoy and managed to avoid the other contacts.
We detected a Knox-class to the south, plus helo, and later, a P-3 orion.
We got within 5 km of Knox, and it was circling slowly. When it accelerated back to 15 kt, we fired a wakehomer at it. It caught on and sank the Knox, which left the helo and the Orion.
19:50 Shoot the helo!
As we do have the Strela SAM, we decided to use them... and we manage to shoot down the Seasprite after shooting 3 Strela at it.
22:38 Can we shoot now?
The Orion kept its distance, and since we cannot go flank on the surface, we went to periscope depth. We started running south, where we expected the convoy to be. After a few minutes, we heard depth charges nearby. The Orion probably came by. We surfaced and started looking for the Orion, found it to the south. It started to circle and come after us, and when it came within range to the east, we shot Strelas at it. Orion was hit and crashed, though a couple of those depth charges did come close.
We continued to dash south to chase down the oiler, our real objective.
24:43 Oiler intercepted
We knew the oiler dodged between the islands to our southwest. We jinked a bit to the south, and continued, and finally got it a bit more southwest of the islands. We got within 8km, then 4km, then started launching torpedoes. We decided to launch 3, and one of them locked on. The oiler was sunk. And we disengaged.
We got a medal, and since we expended all the anti-ship torpedoes, and needed some repairs, we headed back for Murmansk.
26:40 Back to Murmansk
19-JUL-84 2000L
The repair yard comrades managed to patch up the two holes quickly, and the radar mast was also repaired very quickly. We then reloaded the torpedoes, and we are ready to leave by 20-JUL-84 0100L.
What we were NOT ready was when sonar called out there's a NATO sub out there... just north of Murmansk. We submerged and went silent running. Turns out it was a Zwaardvis-class, a modern diesel-electric sub. We managed to disengage after dodging for a while.

This will be my third attempt of Soviet campaign. The year is 1984. After too many Yankee provocations, Soviet Union had enough and declared war. The Soviet Army can take Europe, if the Soviet Navy can stop or at least slow the amount of reinforcements reaching continental Europe from the US. And as a captain of a Soviet submarine, I will do my duty to the Motherland.
