Red Storm Gathering 27 | New Year and War Progress
00:00 Teaser
An American Sturgeon-class SSN was hit by a torpedo, but didn't kill her...
(Earlier that day...)
00:45 Start
04-JAN-1985 0800L North of Murmansk
We just left Murmansk for our 27th war patrol in our "new to us" Shchuka-B class sub Bratsk (K-391), what NATO calls the Akula-class.
Priority Mission: Stop NATO sub landing commandos at Narvik
Our fellow brothers on land have landed on Iceland and taken over Hofn.
02:22 Intercepted
05-JAN-1985 0200L Eastern Norwegian Sea near Lofoten Islands
A NATO subsurface contact came up the coast, and we intercepted it. It was a Sturgeon, and it took several torpedoes to stop it permanently.
Priority Mission: Stop enemy diesel sub(s) from interrupting our naval forces in Eastern Norwegian Sea
We tried patrolling near Torshavn, and observed two subsurface contacts coming east. We had to stop both. Both turned out to be Zwaardvis, and neither were our target.
Our maritime patrols potted contact toward Spitsbergen, we went north to investigate.
18:33 Intercepted Too
11-JAN-1985 1000L Greenland Sea, west of Longyearbyen
This turned out to be a British Trafalgar-class SSN, and we're both under solid ice. We traded a few torpedoes and went our separate ways.
We went back south, past Trondheim, then back north, to North Cape, but were unable to find our target. Finally, something came eastward...
21:15 Intercepted Thrice
13-JAN-1985 1500L Near North Cape
We found a Sturgeon-class SSN, and this one managed to shoot 2 Mk 48s at us, but our Vodopads were faster, and it was sunk. This was indeed our target (finally!)
Priority Mission: Barrier patrol around Hofn to stop enemy sub dropping off SEAL team.
We dashed toward Hofn.
14-JAN-1985 0100L Near Hofn, Iceland
We bumped into two NATO ASW forces. We quickly lost one, then the other.
We spotted a NATO subsurface contact coming south around eastern coast of Iceland. We intercepted it.
29:13 Interception 4
14-JAN-1985 2000L Southeast of Hofn, Iceland
This turned out to be a Skipjack-class SSN, which we sank successfully. However, that was not our target, so we kept waiting.
32:58 Interception 5
15-JAN-1985 2200L Southwest of Hofn, Iceland
We intercepted the NATO subsurface contact coming from the west. With only 3 TEST-71Ms left, this will be the final attempt to fulfill this mission. Our only other torpedoes are 8 x 65-76, useless against submarines.
We found 2 humpback whales... then a Kobben. We launched 2 torpedoes against it, and managed to pincer it and sank it. And this was indeed our target.
We were informed that we have received "Order of Lenin" award for our outstanding achievement in the defense of the Motherland. I announced it to the crew, and received a tired but enthusiastic cheer.
Priority Mission: Engage enemy subs around Holy Loch.
With 1 TEST-71 remaining, we are in no shape to engage submarines. We are heading back to Murmansk.
36:28 Return
16-JAN-1985 2300L Murmansk
While the admiral did not greet us this time (his exec hand-delivered the Order of Lenin award to me though), the crew's happiness in surviving another war patrol and returned home was palpable, as fellow yard crew, as well as crew from other vessels in port were eagerly awaiting "sea stories" from the crew. As we were not damaged, I told them to be back in 16 hours except the watch standers, and to make sure the ones who could not go last time will go this time. Also told the XO to go ashore, I will handle the reload this time.
And thus ended the 27th war patrol of Kapitan Changov. The adventure will continue in the next episode!

This will be my third attempt at the Soviet campaign. The year is 1984. After too many Yankee provocations, the Soviet Union had enough and declared war. The Soviet Army can take Europe, if the Soviet Navy can stop or at least slow the reinforcements reaching continental Europe from the US. And as a captain of a Soviet submarine, I will do my duty to the Motherland.
