Red Storm Gathering 28 | Smashed Multiple Convoys And More
00:00 Teaser
An American Sturgeon-class SSN, already wounded, was finished by multiple torpedoes...
(Several Days Earlier...)
00:28 Start
17-JAN-1985 2000L North of Murmansk
We just left Murmansk for our 28th war patrol in our "new to us" Shchuka-B class sub Bratsk (K-391), what NATO calls the Akula-class.
Priority Mission: Stop NATO sub breaking through our screen at Holy Loch
We won't get there in time.
02:10 New Mission
We were indeed given a mission failure, and given the "free roam mission".
Priority Mission: Go out and free roam, hit anything of significance.
With my inside contacts, I've learned that there is actually a specific transport GLAVCOM want killed: an Algol-class fast sealift ship that can go 25 kt non-stop from US to UK.
02:45 Accidental Encounter
19-JAN-1985 0100L Near Rockall Bank
We bumped into a NATO subsurface contact, which resolved into a Permit-class Yankee SSN. We chased it away with torpedoes and disengaged.
We explored the Western Approaches.
05:10 Convoy Intercepted
22-JAN-1985 0500L Near Celtic Sea
We found a convoy and intercepted it. It looked like an Oslo with 4 freighters, so there's probably another escort. We later found a Type 21. We sank all 6 ships, achieving our first "clean sweep", a term we borrowed from the Yankees.
20:20 Convoy 2 Intercepted
24-JAN-1985 0900L Near Celtic Sea
We intercepted another convoy, this time in shallower waters (225m or less). Looks like 4 escorts (2 Perrys, Type 21, Type 42) escorting 5 NATO containers, plus air support. Later we found a Sturgeon hiding in the middle too. We were planning a stealth approach, but a helo spoiled our surprise, dropping a torpedo 4 km away. After a big furball (another Yankee expression) we managed to kill 3 of 4 escorts, 1 container and the Sturgeon. We need to kill or damage 2 more containers to win the mission. As we tried to break off to the north while Type 21 approached from northwest, Orion found us and depth charged us in shallow waters, then a dropped torpedo almost hit us, damaging our towed array. We popped a decoy south and escaped north, finally breaking free to chase the container ships, capable of 22 kt each. We can do 33 kt, but we ONLY have 3 torpedoes left, 2 x 65-76 (assured kill) and 1 USET-80 (can be damage or kill). We ended up killing 2 containers and damaging another, so we did "win" the mission. With no torpedoes left, we left for Murmansk.
In the meanwhile, our land brothers took all of Europe, completing the land war. Only Torshavn remained in NATO hands. The war is almost over...
48:30 Triumphant Return
26-JAN-1985 0200L Murmansk
The crew was eager to enjoy their short shore leave. I told them to be back in 24 hours. We had accomplished a lot on this war patrol, and they deserve the break.
And thus ended the 28th war patrol of Kapitan Changov. The adventure will continue in the next episode... and the war is nearly over... right?

This will be my third attempt at the Soviet campaign. The year is 1984. After too many Yankee provocations, the Soviet Union had enough and declared war. The Soviet Army can take Europe, if the Soviet Navy can stop or at least slow the reinforcements reaching continental Europe from the US. And as a captain of a Soviet submarine, I will do my duty to the Motherland.
