On Monday, Reddit experienced a significant outage coinciding with a protest by thousands of subreddits against the platform's new API pricing terms. In this video, we delve into the details of the incident and shed light on the reasons behind the blackout.
Reddit's spokesperson, Tim Rathschmidt, acknowledged that the stability issues were caused by a substantial number of subreddits shifting to private mode as part of the protest. The outage was resolved at 1:28 PM ET after Reddit worked to address the anticipated problems.
The problems began on Monday morning, affecting Reddit's desktop and mobile sites as well as its native mobile apps. While some subreddits remained accessible, many users reported issues loading content. At the peak, there were around 43,000 user reports on Downdetector. However, the reports have since declined.
The protest against the API pricing terms led to over 7,000 subreddits going private or read-only. This has resulted in apps like Apollo for Reddit announcing their closure by the end of the month due to the potentially exorbitant costs. Developers, including Apollo's creator Christian Selig, estimated that they would have to pay over $20 million per year to operate their apps. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the impact on accessibility apps, although Reddit has stated that exceptions will be made for such apps.
While some subreddits opted for a 48-hour blackout from June 12th to June 14th, others have chosen to remain private indefinitely until there are changes to Reddit's policies. However, Reddit's CEO, Steve Huffman, expressed the platform's reluctance to make any alterations during an AMA session, further fueling frustration among Reddit users.
