Redout - VR Gameplay HTC Vive
Fast, Crazy, Futuristic, FZero style racing game.
Definitely hit me with some SNES nostalgia. It really did capture that original FZero look and feel. Overall it seemed like a pretty solid racing game even though I'm not a big racing fan.
There were a few issues I had though.
The 'front' of my gameplay area was, as it is for most Vive owners, pointed away from my monitor. This is by design by the Vive setup so that your not waving your hands in the general direction of your monitor while in VR. The problem here is that with Redout, it's a seated experience using a KB or controller. Using a KB, the game appears behind my head.
There's no way in game to adjust this or recenter my view. This is probably the biggest fault. I'm not sure if it's a fault of Redout or Vive but it caused me to rerun the room scale setup which was annoying but a one time fix.
I liked the way the UI was laid out in most cases though it seemed like it was supposed to wrap around me instead of laying flat. It was a bit difficult to see the outer edges of some of the menus.
The last issue worth commenting on is the jarring loading screen. It's just a flat screen dropped into the Vive headset. It's just doesn't feel great to be looking around a 3d space and then get stuck with a static loading screen. It's jarring.
I guess one more, some of the areas didn't appear to have their textures finished. It very well may be a design decision but it ends up looking like untextured objects.
At the end of the day though, none of those really impact the gameplay which as I said was pretty enjoyable. I personally wouldn't pay $31 for it again after getting my hands on it but I'm not a huge racing fan. It may be worth it for racing buffs.
