Points covered in this video:-
Relative Refractive Index -
When light pases from one medium 1 to another medium 2, the refractive index of medium 2 with respect to medium 1 is written as (1n2) and is called relative refractive index;
1n2 = n2/n1 = (c/v2)/(1/v1) = v1/v2
1n2 = speed of light in medium 1/speed of light in medium 2
Similarly, refractive index of medium 1 with respect to medium 2 is:
2n1 = n1/n2 = (c/v1)/(1/v2) = v2/v1
Multiplying both equations we get;
1n2 x 2n1 = v1/v2 x v2/v1
1n2 = 1/ 2n1
i.e, refractive index of medium 2 with respect to medium 1 is reciprocal of refractive index of medium 1 with respect to medium 2.
For example, refractive index of glass with respect to air, i.e. ang = 3/2. Therefore, refractive index of air with respect to glass, i.e., gna = 1/(3/2) = β
Similarly, refractive index of water with respect to air, i.e., anw = 4/3. Therefore, refractive index of ait with respect to water i.e., wna = 1/(4/3) = ΒΎ
Again, refractive index of glass with respect to water is
wng = ng/nw = (3/2)/(4/3) = 9/8
