Repton 3 Now Level 7
My new route through the seventh level of Now, an improvement of no less than 48 seconds on my previous best.
The original reason I wanted to make this video was to illustrate a point about the behaviour of spirits. In the original Repton 3, spirits were initialised with "forward" meaning west, so a spirit in the north-west corner of a room would move to its left (i.e. south) and would then move in a small circle, since it would always be able to turn left. This was not a problem on any of the original 24 levels, but it was awkward for designing new levels, and so the game engine that comes with the expansion packs was updated to make spirits' movement at the start of the level sensitive to their surroundings. A spirit in the north-west corner of a room will now move east, as expected.
However, the correction was too simplistic. All spirits with an object to their north were affected, so in particular, spirits that started blocked to north and south and free to east and west would now start moving east. For Superior Interactive's PC remake of Repton 3 (http://www.superiorinteractive.com/repton/3.htm) this anomaly had to be fixed in order to make a single engine on which both the original levels and those from the expansion packs could be played. (In particular, if Finale Level 5 is played on the updated game engine, one spirit goes in a cage immediately, as can be seen on LordTriax's video of that level.) The only disadvantage to this is that some levels designed to be played with that anomaly present would be affected.
This is one of them. Four of the spirits in the ring around the central enclosure start off moving east on the BBC version, west on the PC version. That means there are still four clockwise and four anti-clockwise spirits, but the synchronisation of the two groups is different, and if Repton transports at the first possible moment, instead of only just being able to reach the skull maze before being hit by a spirit as on the BBC version, he has enough space behind him to grab a side diamond and save time collecting it later on.
The music for this video is "Disco 2000" by Pulp.
