Resident Evil 2 Remake is a full-fledged remake of the second part of the cult survival horror series by Capcom, which was originally released in 1998 on the PlayStation console, but was also converted to PC computers, Dreamcast, Nintendo 64 and GameCube consoles. The project to refresh the legendary production was undertaken by Capcom's main development studio, R&D Division 1, led by producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, who previously worked on, among others, Resident Evil HD released in early 2015.
The plot of Resident Evil 2 Remake largely overlaps with the plot of the original and takes place several months after the events that took place in the first installment of the series. A zombie epidemic turns the inhabitants of Raccoon City into bloodthirsty monsters. At the same time, a novice policeman, Leon S. Kennedy, and young Claire Redfield arrive in town and try to find her brother, who is missing in this dangerous place. Right after our heroes face the first wave of zombies together, due to a coincidence, they are separated and we observe further events from the perspective of one of them. Depending on the decision made, the game's plot develops in a slightly different way, although all events and characters encountered along the way are closely related to the situation in the city.
In terms of gameplay, Resident Evil 2 Remake strongly resembles the original from 1998, but the title expands on classic solutions and introduces many new elements. Players can choose from two playable characters - Claire and Leon. This affects the course of the plot and the available equipment, so to fully experience the attractions offered by the game, you must complete it twice.
The game mainly involves exploring the streets and buildings of a city overrun by zombies and mutant victims of the sinister corporation's experiments. The heroes can deal with the threat using an arsenal of various weapons, including pistols, shotguns, knives, and over time, including: grenade launcher. However, they never have a large supply of ammunition, so they often have to decide whether it is more profitable to fight or to escape. In subsequent alleys and rooms we find valuable supplies, notes that expand our knowledge of the plot, and items that enable us to solve numerous environmental puzzles. Leon and Claire are only able to carry a limited number of items, which forces them to make frequent decisions about what will be more necessary at a given moment and what can be abandoned.
Compared to the original Resident Evil 2, the new version decided to change the camera position. Instead of showing the action from various, rigidly defined perspectives, this time we see the events from behind the protagonists' backs.
Unlike the aforementioned Resident Evil HD, which was only a highly tweaked version of the original, in the case of Resident Evil 2 Remake we are dealing with a full-fledged remake of the original from nearly two decades ago. This means that the game has not only been refreshed, but created from scratch with modern hardware platforms in mind, using the plot and modified mechanics of the legendary "2".
