The second installment of a series of horror adventure games developed by the Polish studio Bloober Team. In Layers of Fear 2, we board a ship on the high seas and take part in the creation of a film that is yet another masterpiece.
Layers of Fear 2 is a continuation of the horror adventure game from 2016. The production was developed by the authors of the original, the Polish studio Bloober Team, and was published by the American company Gun Media. The title was initially known under the working name Project Melies, a reference to the name of one of the pioneers of cinema, Georges Mélies.
In Layers of Fear 2 we play the role of a famous actor. He received a role in a film shot on board a transatlantic liner, and it is on the ship that the entire game takes place. During the game, we often hear the voice of the director who expects the actor to perform at the highest level. The director never appears personally on screen, but is responsible, among other things, for preparing the scenes in which decisions are made. They may be consistent with the director's expectations or contradictory to the script he has prepared. Throughout the game, we reach four main choices that define the end of the adventure. Layers of Fear 2 offers three very different endings.
Like the first part, Layers of Fear 2 is filled with strange and surreal scenes. While exploring the transatlantic liner, we do not meet any people, only mannequins placed in various poses. The arrangement and decoration of many rooms change dynamically and, as a result, we may find ourselves in the same locations again, which, however, will offer new content that allows us to look at the whole thing from a different perspective.
In Layers of Fear 2, the action is shown from a first-person perspective (FPP). We spend most of our time exploring subsequent rooms of the ship. This is enriched by interacting with objects in the environment. We can take some of them with us; all such collectibles are stored in the hero's cabin, where all subsequent acts of the adventure begin. Layers of Fear 2 also features many logical and environmental puzzles. For example, we may be forced to determine the correct combination for a safe, arrange an image from moving elements, open a huge vault door, restore electricity to a given part of the ship, or find the right frames of a film installed in the projector. The game's puzzles aren't too difficult; Additionally, there are often hints nearby to help you deal with them. In Layers of Fear 2, you also occasionally encounter arcade sections. These are primarily various escape scenes in which we have to hide or run away from threats (the hero is completely defenseless). However, arcade scenes may also require, for example, avoiding areas illuminated by spotlights. There are plenty of scenes in Layers of Fear 2 that try to scare the player. The so-called However, there are much fewer jump scares than in the first part of the series. They have also been better prepared to surprise the player more effectively. Feelings of fear and helplessness can also be intensified by exploring the many claustrophobic and poorly lit areas on board the ship.
Layers of Fear 2 has very good quality three-dimensional graphics running on the Unreal Engine. One of the unique features of the game is that some of the ship's rooms have been prepared in several different versions. As we progress through the game, we can return to already known places, which, however, offer a changed graphic style and often hide completely new secrets. The game's sound quality is of a high standard. The role of the narrator/director was played by Hollywood actor Tony Todd, who became famous primarily for the Candyman horror series.
