Resident Evil: Extinction Movie Review

Released in 2007, Resident Evil: Extinction starts off with what seems like a nightmare that Alice is having, acting as a recap of the events so far that lead up to this film, but we find out that in fact Umbrella have been cloning lots of Alices and testing them to see how far they can get in a kind of obstacle course resembling the mansion house, lab and hospital.
We see outside that we are now in a Desert in Nevada, and learn that following the events of the last film, that the
T-virus has spread worldwide and the whole globe has been infected and the whole world is now a desolate wasteland devoid of live except for small groups of survivors. So I guess they nuked Racoon City for no reason then and it just spread anyway?
So this is where the films have completely departed from the games settings and have now pretty much stopped being a reference to them, now having a Post-Apocalyptic setting instead, which is a shame, but we’ll just have to see where they go from here. I’ve never seen this film or any of the ones after this, so I am going into this film series completely blind from this point onwards.

We then see what Alice is up to, she’s not with the other Racoon City survivors anymore and is on her own, now a Nomad travelling around on a motorbike and helping survivors as much as she can. She responds to a distress call over the radio, but it turns out to be a trap, but she turns the tables on them and pwns them which was funny to see.

Then we cut to a Mad max style convoy of busses, vans and 4x4s, and the occupants are Carlos and that other guy from the last movie, LJ or something? And some new characters including Claire Redfield who maybe looks a bit like her, but if it wasn’t for her name you’d have no clue this was supposed to be Claire. I think they should have at least given her her Iconic Red Denim vest just to make it look a bit more like her. she’s kinda like the leader of the group, you’d think Carlos would be the leader, since he’s a trained soldier and survived Racoon City, but I’m not sure if this Claire was even at Racoon City, It didn’t say, or if it did I didn’t catch it but I don’t think it did. The other new characters are pretty much just forgettable cannon fodder without any personalities. The only goodie who doesn’t return in this film are Jill who’s nowhere to be seen. And that little girl who’s not in it either.

We then cut to the inside of an Umbrella facility, underground like the Hive was, and we see Albert Wesker and some Umbrella Guys as holograms in a meeting, the actor looks a bit like him, sunglasses and Blonde hair, but his hair’s too short, it should be a bit longer and slicked back.
We learn that that Umbrella scientist from the last film is the baddie of this film and he wants to use this new stuff they’ve developed to inject into zombies, in an attempt to restore some of their humanity to make them docile, and to then domesticate them so they can be used as slave labour and Humans can return to the surface again.

The setting seems to be like a mashup of Mad Max and The Walking Dead, with the desert and old vehicles and groups of survivors trying to stay one step ahead of the zombie hordes and find somewhere safe. I’m not really a fan to be honest, now Raccoon City’s been nuked, they could’ve maybe explored one of the later games for this film, maybe Rockfort Island or I would have liked for it to have been set in the Arklay Mountains maybe, it would have been cool to see some more zombified wildlife, like a Bear or something could have been scary, but they decided to go with a desert setting.

So I Thought Resident Evil Extinction was an alright film, it was actually the opposite of the first two films, as they both started off good but then got worse, however this one started off boring and got better the further we got into it.
It’s a shame they’ve stopped following the games as the first two were loosely based on RE1,2 and 3, but this one doesn’t resemble the games at all really, it’s post-apocalyptic now. I really wasn’t keen on the setting with the whole Mad Max look, I just find that stuff boring in my opinion.
It started off boring and I wasn’t enjoying it at first, but it did get better once stuff started happening. It had some decent action and the special effects look better than the first 2 films, I’d give it a 4 out of 10, pretty average, kinda entertaining, but was boring for most of it and it has little to do with the games. They just put the Resident Evil name on it to make it sell.
