Using Yamagi, an enhanced modern client to Play this classic Quake 2 game in Ubuntu 13.04.
Yamagi is available for Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, and Windows. You need the original Quake 2 .pak files for it to work (watch the video to see how to acquire the original game files)

Installation Instructions:
For Ubuntu I downloaded the three .deb files and installed them with Ubuntu Software Centre (sudo dpkg -i *.deb) if you prefer terminal method.

Then I copied all the data from a Quake 2 ISO to the /usr/share/games/quake2 folder

CD Audio files in .ogg format can be placed in the baseq2/music folder
