The roguelike elements have always been the lot of small games. With a few exceptions (like Diablo), they tend to be found mostly in bold indie projects that are no strangers to high complexity and unusual gameplay mechanics. It's all the more interesting that one of the first PlayStation 5 exclusives, Returnal, for its high price and impressive graphics, relies on the same principles as the conventional The Binding of Isaac or Hades. Another thing is that those principles don't fit it very well.
Maze of Fauna.
An astronaut named Selena flies contrary to warnings to the mysterious planet Atropos, where she instantly crashes. Waking up near the wrecked ship, she sets out to explore her surroundings and soon meets death in the clutches of the inhabitants of the alien planet. And then she wakes up again near the ship, again sets out into the unknown, and again dies an ignominious death. And again. And again.
The alien world is riddled with the ruins of an ancient civilization, scraps of whose history Selena learns from holograms and monoliths. The artifacts left in the ruins and even the parasites constantly trying to suck on her spacesuit help her survive. Defeating monster bosses, the heroine gets rare upgrades that remain with her after another death, and the keys that open access to new regions. So she gradually gets closer to being rescued from the cursed planet.
At first Returnal resembles the legendary Metroid Prime: a lone woman in a spacesuit explores an alien planet, investigates the cause of the collapse of a forgotten civilization, scans obelisks and artifacts, fires off enemies and collects upgrades. Instead of an open world there is a set of rooms that are often cut off from each other by doors, and even a map here - like in the hit 2002: a comfortable, three-dimensional, allowing a glance around the entire location and to think what areas have not yet been cleaned up. You want to explore every corner, memorizing where to return later with upgrades. Here branches block the passage, there - the energy field, and over there under the water you can see something - well, you'll have to get it later!
Naturally, Selene will also have to deal with the aggressive fauna and technology of a dead civilization: from small four-legged creatures to huge tentacle chtoni, turrets, drones and huge mechanoids with machine guns. And if Metroid Prime was dedicated to exploring the world, Returnal is first of all a hardcore shooter, where you can clearly see the handwriting of the authors of Resogun and Nex Machina.
Delighted +
Returnal Review. The unbearable cyclicality of being
Great combat mechanics;
Comfortable map;
Great visual design and sound.
Disappointing. -
Returnal Review. The unbearable cyclicality of being
The monotony of permanent death;
Lack of saves with frequent crashes;
The maximally inarticulate narrative.
