Review Crew: Super Scope 6 (Super NES)

Released at a time when big burley movie stars blew things up with missile launchers, Nintendo's Super Scope probably seemed like a can't-miss proposition. It's an enormous bazooka that comes with six games, how could that possibly go wrong? These days we remember how difficult it was to lug around and the lack of support, but what did game critics think of the Super Scope at the time? Let's find out as we take a look back at the original scores from 1992.
Perhaps this won't come as a surprise, but Nintendo Power ended up loving sixty dollar add-on. "An incredible system needs incredible accessories," said an editor employed by Nintendo. This review goes for the hard sell, suggesting that the Super Scope is light years beyond the NES Zapper. It goes as far as to suggest that the device has pinpoint accuracy at any distance or angle. I find that hard to believe, but Nintendo Power assures me that the Super Scope 6 will blow me away. They gave it a 3.8 out of five.
GamePro also had good things to say about the device. Slasher Quan echoes the NES Zapper comparisons, cheerleading the 16-bit future. While never really voicing an opinion about the games, GamePro does say that you'll get plenty of diverse gameplay for your money. I guess that's something.
Electronic Gaming Monthly was far less enthusiastic about the Super Scope. Of the four reviews, none of them scored higher than a 6. Ed was the lowest score, giving the package a 3. He complimented the accuracy and cool look, but had absolutely no trust in Nintendo. He makes a convincing argument by bringing up the Power Pad, Zapper and R.O.B.
Martin is slightly more interested in the product, though just barely. "This is a pretty cool idea for a peripheral," he says. Too bad the games that come with it are dull. He notes how repetitive the action gets and he's worried the Super Scope will turn into the Zapper. He gave the package a 5 out of ten.
When we average together all of the old reviews, the Super Scope 6 scores a middling 58%. Personally, I think that's a bit high. Without Nintendo Power and GamePro, this device would have been somewhere in the mid-40s.
