Henry Golding stars as an interloper caught in a 4 way battle between the Yakuza, a Ninja clan, a shadowy terrorist organization and a covert military agency in the latest attempt to turn the "G.I. JOE" brand into a big-screen franchise; this time with a scaled-back reboot that serves up a refreshed origin story for the no-longer-silent ninja and his associated side-story in the form of an appropriately cheesy throwback to the assembly-line martial-arts espionage thrillers of the 1980s that inspired them in the first place. Amusingly novel for the ground it chooses NOT to break in terms of letting an Asian leading man still act the part of a charmingly-arrogant American dope in a film still set largely in East Asia; it stumbles as the rare action film where underwhelming fight sequences prove a distraction from otherwise compelling storytelling populated by memorable characters - though not enough to cease being worthwhile.
