One of 2020's most thought-provoking and stylish documentary features impressively delivers a legitimately excellent political-thriller and darkly-tragic action/disaster movie as it dramatizes - but also, crucially, de-mystifies - the infamous story of Marvin Hemeyer and "The Killdozer Rampage." Combining archival news footage, new interviews with the survivors of the event and exciting (but non-exploitative) re-enactments, the film painstakingly documents the events leading up to the day a disturbed local businessman attempted to destroy his small mountain town by way of a bulldozer rebuilt into a fortified combat-vehicle; nearly killing multiple police officers and demolishing a library, playground and other structures before taking his own life. While The Internet would later turn "The Killerdozer" into a meme and Hemeyer into an ironic hero-figure, "TREAD" strips back the punchlines to expose the sad story of paranoia and narcissism behind the mystique.
