Part 8: King of Fighters 2001
SNK is a company that surprises me in more ways than one. They experienced many highs and a lot of lows. By 2000, their US branch was closed down and the company would be bought by Aruze, a company known for pachinko machines. Things were only getting worse. Much of SNK's executives including their founder Eikichi Kawakasi left the company to form Playmore in August 2001. Two months later, Aruze pulled the plug shutting the company down. Many of SNK's licenses would be up for auction, including BrezzaSoft that developed KOF. Playmore would bid for the property rights of many SNK titles and would rehire much of their older staff. By 2003, SNK would be reborn as SNK Playmore.
Now with the history lesson out of the way, what happened in King of Fighters. Since SNK was having financial issues, KOF was entrusted to Eolith, a company from South Korea. That's a history lesson saved for another time. Eolith would be responsible for KOF 2001 and 2002. After that, SNK Playmore would take over for 2003 all the way to KOF 13 in 2010. With all that out of the way, let us finally continue with the Road to KOF XV, the final entry in the NESTS saga, The King of Fighters 2001.
After the events of KOF 2000, the NESTS organization was pissed. Pissed that K' and Maxima are still alive. Pissed that the Clone Zero rebelled against them and now Whip has learned the truth of her origins, joining with her brother K' and Maxima. So they decide that enough is enough. NESTS officially organizes KOF 2001 for one reason: to gather all their enemies in one place so they can crush them once and for all. Many familiar faces make their return along with some new ones. In terms of teams, NESTS decide to bring their own team into the mix comprising of their strongest agents and led by Kula Diamond. Kyo reunites with his old friends Benimaru and Daimon, forming Team Japan along with Shingo. And if you wonder about Iori, Seth convinced him to team up with the mercenaries. We all know why he joined? To fight Kyo. As for the Hero team, K', Maxima and Whip team up with Lin to take the fight to NESTS.
Compared to KOF 2000, 2001 is alright. The Striker system was downgraded but also changed as depending on your team composition, you can have a max of 4 fighters on a team. Not only that but you can have up to 3 strikers. This is a risk/reward that can be useful if you want to dish out the pain. If you are very skilled then it can really work out.
I use the Hero team, consisting of K', Maxima, Whip and Lin. As for the bosses, holy moly they are a pain especially for Igniz. Igniz is just a pain in the butt. In actual canon, Igniz defeats the Hero team and it took the team of K', Kyo, Iori and Kula (who learned the truth about her creation and seeing Igniz go nuts) to take him down. Ultimately everyone is saved as Igniz dies along with the space base. K' and Kula bury the hatchet as they move toward a bright future. Whip bonds with Kula while Kyo and Iori have yet another battle with an unknown outcome.
