Ned Stark finds King Robert after a hunting trip, who has been mortally wounded by a boar he fought while drunk. Robert tells Lord Stark of his dying wishes and has him write them down, including that Ned is to serve as Protector of the Realm in a regency until Prince Joffrey comes of age, though Ned, knowing the truth of Joffrey's parentage, alters the letter for it to be until Robert's rightful heir comes of age.
