Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves [Nes][CompleteTheGame]
A movie-licensed game with fleshed out story that is longer than the movie.
The game is not bad. It got issues, of course, but still better than the bad movie-licensed games.
It got four different modes which gives a variation, and the characters looks like their movie versions.
...even if they managed to switch the faces of Guy of Gisbourne (Michael Wincott) and the Sheriff of Nottingham (Alan Rickman).
The downsides...
They used the color brown too much. Especially in the portraits.
The game feels too long. I could easily have added another hour++ if I explored and grinded some more, but once the enemies starts using crossbows it is no use fighting. It is so easy to get 2-3 enemies starting to shoot arrows at you when you get stuck in the background trying to defeat them, and it will only take seconds before all your health is gone. Best way to grind is to defeat the boar, leave before his death animation ends and then return.
The item system is really bad. You always find more items than you can carry, and the weight limits forces you to move around too much stuff. And then they suddenly remove Duncan from your party, which most people use as a package mule, and he takes all your items with him. You will get a weapon halfway across the game, the Druid’s Dagger, which you need to kill the second last enemy in the game. If you dropped it to make place for food or had it on Duncan when he left... then it is impossible to complete the game.
The game feels unfinished. The manual got information about weapons and shields that you can't find in the game. They are fully coded and useable if you use a cheating device.
The level system feels off. It gives you more HP and raises the weight limit, but only 5 levels feels too small, even if it will take you some time getting there, and it feels like the game should have been longer.
...but on the other hand, completing it in one sitting would have been harder. The game really lacks a password system.
...but it got a hidden password system made for playtesting which you can access, but the problem is that it doesn't carry the items or levels. It even fails at giving you the Druid’s Dagger, so half of them are useless if you want to complete the game.
You can collect Gold, which you can use twice in the game. The first time is halfway in the game where you need to pay 200 Gold to train your men. If you don't have it, you will have to kill some enemies and hope that they drop some. The second time is in a village where you can buy a chest key for 20.
Chest keys... it exist 4 of them in the game. And it only exist one chest. In an area that you can't return to. The two first keys can be found in that area. Another problem is that no matter how many keys you pick up, they only count as one key. Which is kinda useless.
The duel mode... well, you must pretty much "cheat" by winning, trick the enemy to jump up on something high and then attack him when he is too high to attack you.
It is too easy to get stuck in the background. You walk fine while suddenly one pixel is in your way, so you can't move forward. And it prevents you from attacking anybody in front of you. They can however attack you fine. And there are some bushes in a village that you will get stuck in permanently if you walk inside them, forcing you to reset the game.
If you can overlook those problems, then the game is pretty fun from time to time. But it feels like the game was intended to be so much more than what it is. Which is a shame.
