Rocket system for 1,000mph car tested 03.10.12
A crucial test on the road to creating the world's first 1,000mph racing car took place today.
The BLOODHOUND Project team fired up its unique hybrid rocket at The Aerohub in Cornwall Airport.
It is the largest of its kind ever designed in Europe and the biggest to be fired in the UK for 20 years.
Once operating at full capacity it will be capable of generating 27,500lbs of thrust -- that is equivalent to 80,000 horsepower or the combined output of 95 Formula 1 cars.
Today's test -- a major milestone in the project -- saw BLOODHOUND's engineers evaluate the complete rocket system for the first time.
It comprises a Cosworth CA2010 F1 engine, High Test Peroxide oxidiser tank, custom designed gearbox and software and Falcon Hybrid Rocket, designed by 28 year-old self- trained rocketeer Daniel Jubb.
The test is was conducted inside a Hardened Air Shelter with data and video streamed live to an adjacent building where the engineers observed.
