Rogue Stormers is a side scroller platformer shooter. It has RPG and roguelike elements as well. It can be quite fast paced and difficult. The gameplay will remind you of games like Metal Slug, Contra etc. The game also reminded me of Shoot Many Robots which is one of my favorite 2D shooter games.

Graphics:

The game looks gorgeous with very nice art-style, which Is dark and gloomy and really makes you feel like you’re in some kind of creepy atmosphere. The game runs very smooth. The FPS get locked to whatever Hz frequency you choose in the graphics menu’s resolution option. So in theory if your monitor can support 144Hz refresh rate you should get 144 FPS lock. For me, my monitor goes to maximum 72Hz so my FPS was locked to that.

Sound:

The game features very nice almost rock music. It’s very nice and engaging music and suitable for the pace of the game. The hit and enemy sounds are also pretty good and overall the music and sounds are very nice in this game. I especially like the opening theme music of this game.

Gameplay:

The gameplay is simple run and gun. You can move around with WASD keys and shoot with your mouse. All the keys can be re-assigned on the keyboard so that’s a good thing. You have a jetpack of sorts which lets you jump a bit higher and dash through air or ground as well, this dash ability is very useful in dodging the enemy bullets. You have a main gun which shoots infinite bullets, a secondary weapon can be picked up in-game. There are many types of secondary weapons available, such as droid which go and shoot random enemies, huge projectile bullets weapons etc. These secondary weapons also have a health bar and once depleted these can no longer be used. The secondary weapons also run out of ammo and recharge automatically over time.

Your main goal is to go through randomly generated level and get to either the wall and take it down and in every other level you get to face a boss. Every time you die you start at the beginning so the game can be pretty unforgiving. That’s where the RPG elements come in, when you do levels over and over again you gain XP and eventually start leveling up. Once per level you get to choose a perk which is permanent. So by making lots of runs and leveling up you keep piling on perks which help you out with the game’s later levels. The perks can improve your weapons or give you bonuses such as if your currency is low you get 10% more damage from your guns etc.

You start off with 60 HP (or if you have perks which increase HP you will start with that perk bonus added) and in order to beat the game you must do it in one run without dying. This can be difficult as the game gets pretty hard as lots of enemies and projectiles are being thrown at you. Your only ways to gain health are either if an enemy drops a little health kit and you pick it up, it’ll grant you some health or the other way to get health is the mini slot machine. You gamble a number of coins (usually 100 and 250) and you can get random things. It can be a big health pack or multiple big health packs. It can be 10 coins, or 750 coins. Other than that you can also get secondary weapons and or temporary bonus like e.g. when you get hit a giant spiked ball goes around you damage any nearby enemies etc. You can also find these temporary bonuses in chests. These chests come in different types e.g. one chest requires you to give up 30 HP to open, another one requires keys to open etc.

When you kill enemies sometimes they drop souls which you can collect. These are basically experience points which help you level up. Many types of enemies in the game as well. From tiny goblins to huge monsters who attack with all sorts of projectiles, turrets, flying snakes, goblins in balloons etc.

There’s more than one main character and ever character has their own unique ability. Level cap seems to be 60 for heroes. You start off with Brekht and eventually unlock other characters every 2 stages. Each hero has their own abilities and health/bonus stats. Brekht for example starts off with 1 key and 250 gold, his unique ability is rapid fire for a few seconds. If you’re playing co-op this effect will affect all the players playing the game. Game can be played single player, local co-op or online co-op.

Graphics: 9/10
Sound: 9/10
Gameplay: 8/10
Overall: 9/10

Conclusion:

Very fun platformer shooter very similar to Shoot many robots, Contra, Metal Slug series etc. Can get pretty hard but the progress you make and the progression of the permanent perks you get, keep you coming back for more. The graphics and sound quality are pretty good and so is the gameplay. Highly recommended for 2D shooter fans.
