Grip is a very fast, futuristic combat racing game. With very nice looking graphics and nice soundtrack, the game can be an adrenaline rush. It’s a racing game where you can drive on walls and even the ceiling upside down. This takes racing to another level as you can use the terrain to your advantage. Combine that with weapons and power ups it’s a really nice game. It’s in early access at the moment so you can expect bugs and such.

Graphics:

The graphics looks absolutely gorgeous in this game. It runs on Unreal 4 engine so you can expect some nice graphics. The maps also look very themed, like the snowy track is dark and really feels like you’re racing in the snowy mountains. Plenty of option in the graphics menu as you can expect from any Unreal engine based game. I played the game on high settings (maximum is the EPIC setting.) and I was getting 40-60 FPS throughout.

Sound:

The music in this game is sort of a hybrid between techno and a little bit of metal thrown in. It’s very upbeat and fuels your adrenaline you get from the races. This sort of music is well suitable for a fast paced combat racing game. The good thing about music in this game is that you can individually select the tracks you like and turn the others off. There are a total of 10 tracks as of this review.

Gameplay:

At the moment you can only play 1 player or 2 player split screen. The split screen can be done horizontally or vertically. There is no campaign or multiplayer mode as of now but the developers are working on it. The car has huge wheels with the body in the middle so the wheels are sticking out on top and bottom, this means if the car even gets flipped upside down, you can keep going.

There are many types of games you can play. Simple race, elimination, deathmatch, playground and time trial. All of these are pretty fun. Simple races are regular races where you have to complete a number of laps and whoever finishes first wins, if you get hit by enemy missiles or gun you will respawn. The Elimination is also like racing except when you eliminate someone they’re permanently out of the race. Deathmatch is a car arena where you have a certain number of combatants and you must go around collecting power-ups and trying to eliminate others. Last one standing wins the match. The playground is also arena with all sorts of tunnels, pipes, half-pipes and other obstacles and there are a certain number of collectibles you must pick up within the allotted time. The time trial is basically you trying to do the track in best time.

You get pickups and you can hold 2 pickups at one time. The first one can be triggered using the shift while the second can be triggered by pressing the control key on the keyboard. These power ups include a machine gun, missiles and mines. There’s also the nitro boost speed power up and another protection power-up which sort of gives you armor at the back of your car so you can defend against machine gun or missiles attacks from behind.

There’s a total of 2 racing tracks, 2 combat arenas and 1 playground map at the time of this review. The developers are working on more maps and more content. So keep an eye out for future updates which can make this game even better.

Graphics: 8/10
Sound: 7/10
Gameplay: 8/10
Overall: 7/10

Conclusion:

The game has very fast paced adrenaline fueled combat racing. Arcade type of racing with weapons combat. You can drive on walls, ceilings of tunnels, sides of the mountain basically any terrain. The camera will follow you no matter how many times you flip upside down inside of a tunnel, this makes it a very fun experience in my opinion. The game certainly has bugs and low FPS from what I could tell but it’s in early access, so the developers are ironing out the bugs hopefully.
