Welcome to my Let's Play walkthrough of Neon Chrome for PC, a brand new top-down shooter/roguelike/roleplaying game hybrid from Finnish developer 10tons.
In Neon Chrome, you play a mysterious hacker attempting to overthrow the tyrannical Overseer of the Neon Chrome corporation through the use of cryogenically frozen combatants, lovingly named "Assets".
Each game begins the same way: assume control of one of three randomly generated Assets, each with their own weapons, abilities, and character classes, and fight as far as you can into the heart of the randomly generated Neon Chrome facility.
If and when your Asset finally bites the big one, the resources he or she gained can be allocated to improve your stats, equipment, upgrades, and abilities for subsequent runs.
Neon Chrome's roguelike formula is not exactly new, but this is one of the most polished roguelikes I've seen in a long time. The shooting mechanics are weighty and satisfying, weapon drops are varied and plentiful, the cyberpunk aesthetic bleeds into every aspect of the game's presentation, and every run leaves you itching to hop into a new Asset and try your hand again.
The gameplay is balanced in true roguelike form, and intelligent decision-making is a necessity if you want to survive. Around every new corner is an important choice: on whom do you spend that final rocket? Is your health pool large enough to justify that melee upgrade? Is that instant-use item worth sacrificing a permanent character boost? Will that ammo-doubling implant still be useful if you find a different weapon? These are questions you'll have to answer, and you'll have a blast doing it.
Perhaps Neon Chrome's best feature is its variety, which is an essential component of any procedurally generated repetition-based game. Dungeon layouts are interesting and almost entirely destructible, and the top-down viewing angle provides ample opportunity for you to plan your attack and execute (or watch your plan fall apart at the seams). There's a wide variety of enemy types to keep you for you to tear apart, and environmental hazards will keep you on your toes. There's also plenty of loot for attentive hackers to find.
All things considered, Neon Chrome is in fantastic shape for a 1.0 version, and I believe it has a ton of potential if 10tons continues to support their product. If the gameplay is this much fun out of the box, just think what a content patch or a big update could do!
