Ronin's Retrocade: Suckerpunch Sunday #15 - Battle Arena Toshinden (PS1)
1For this week's edition of Suckerpunch Sunday, we're going back to the release of the original Playstation in 1995 and revisiting a game that set the tone for a whole generation of fighting games that would quickly overtake it in popularity - the original Battle Arena Toshinden!
While it has few frills and controls that haven't aged well, it was THE game that took gamers out of the 2D world of Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat and into the 32-bit era on what would become the dominant console of the generation.
For all its innovations, however, Toshinden would soon be elbowed aside in favor of newer and better franchises like Tekken and SoulCaliber, and within a year, it would become a largely forgotten title - another example of how short-lived a game's popularity could be.
