Show Notes:

At E3 this year, Nintendo finally broke their silence regarding the new Fire Emblem game for Switch. The game is called Fire Emblem: Three Houses. This tactical RPG will feature formations of troops supporting individual units on the battlefield, and features three protagonists. The game is expected to launch exclusively on the Nintendo Switch in Spring of 2019.

At E3, crowd favorite CD Project Red announced that their upcoming project, Cyberpunk 2077 will in fact be a first-person RPG. The game is based on the pen and paper role playing game Cyberpunk 2020, which also inspired games like Shadowrun. The game will take place in a retro-futuristic cyberpunk setting in the year 2077. Cyberpunk 2077 is schedule for release in June of 2019 for PC, Playstation 4 and Xbox One.

Octopath Traveler is still slated for July 13th, and with the release less than one month away Square Enix has released an updated demo of the game. The new demo allows players access to each of the 8 protagonists, and one can play for up to three hours before being returned to the title screen. At that point you can begin another save file for another 3 hours. When the full game releases, you will be allowed to carry over your existing save-data to the full release of the game. Octopath traveller is a Nintendo Switch exclusive, developed by Square Enix and Acquire.

The Steam release of Chrono Trigger received an update on June 6th. The User Interface was updated to look much better on computer screens. This comes on the heels of massive fan outcry after the game’s release on Steam, which was criticized for its poor optimization for computer displays and apparent lack of effort. More updates are planned, with another update expected later this month.

Over the course of E3 several games were revealed, and others still that we alerady knew about were announced to be coming to the United States. Here are some of the ones that caught my eye.

In Japan, Namco Bandai announced at a Tales of Festival, that they are beginning work on a new Tales game. This comes on the heels of their reveal that Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition is coming to the West. This version contains previously missing content and many other extras that fans have been longing for since it's original release 10 years ago. This is currently available for preorder on Amazon for Nintendo Switch, PS4, XBOX ONE and PC for $49.99, but with no release date mentioned. On the heels of THAT announcement, the Fan Translators behind the PS3 release have withdrawn their patch and have requested other hosts of the patch to end distribution in the spirit of supporting the official release.

NieR Automata, Become as Gods edition, by Platinum Studios was announced at E3 this year as coming to the XBOX One. It currently appears to be getting a digital only release. This version of the game will include game expansion DLC and other digital extras. The game is currently available for preorder for 49.99 from the Microsoft Store, and will launch one week from today, on the night of June 25th.

Platinum Studios are also working on a new release for 2019. The game is called Babylon’s Fall, and not much else is known. I’m including this in the update mostly because I’m hopeful that it will be an RPG of some sort. That’s sort of the vibe the trailer is giving me. However, it could also simply be an action game like Bayonetta, and if that’s the case we still win. Bablyon's fall is currently slated for the PS4 and Steam in 2019, though I would personally expect delays.

During their E3 Direct, Nintendo announced Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna ~ The Golden Country. This is an expansion to XC2 for the switch, which is expected to be released on September 14th for download. This offers a new story mode that takes place 500 years before the events of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. A week after the digital release, the game will receive a standalone physical release hitting store shelves.

The Wonder Boy series creator Ryuichi Nishiwaza is collaborating with Game Atelier to create a spiritual successor to for his franchise called Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom. The game is a sidescrolling adventure title with puzzle-solving elements, and features hand-drawn animated sprites. The game is coming to all current platforms sometime in 2018, with physical releases planned for PS4 and Nintendo Switch.
