Runescape 3 is a sandbox, point and click MMORPG with a hotkey based combat system. There’s 2 versions of Runescape, Runescape 3, the less popular “modern version of the game” that’s had over 20 years of updates and Old School Runescape (the most popular version) which released In 2013.
Runescape 3 for years has been known as a microtransaction hellscape. Buy exp, afk skilling dummy’s, treasure hunter, various convenience items and cosmetic overrides that butchered the sense of visual progression…
Recently however Jagex released a video where the new CEO announced that they’ll be changing their approach to microtransactions in Runescape 3 and experiment with things such as turning off treasure hunter, disabling MTX skilling items during double exp events and turning off cosmetic overrides on select worlds.
This announcement was received very positively by the community but it also got me thinking, Would Runescape 3 actually be a good game even if you removed the entire cash shop and all pay to win entirely? Is the cash shop the only thing holding it back? Is it even a good game?
Most Runescape 3 coverage on YouTube focused mainly on how bad the cash shop is but for years it has been possible to play RS3 with zero p2w through the Ironman game mode.
I love playing an Ironman in Old School Runescape and I’ve been completely addicted to it for the past year so in this video I’ll be trying out Runescape 3 as a hardcore ironman and judging it purely as a game as if it had no MTX.
Will Runescape 3 Ironman hook me in like OSRS did? Or is the game just objectively worse than Old School? Stick around to the end for the pros and cons to find out.
