Runescape players got freaking mad, and it's all over a new battle pass offer for the MMORPG : Now before I begin I want to clarify that I'm talking about Runescape not Oldschool Runescape and apparently there has been some controversy surrounding this MMO when they recently announced and released their battle pass. They called it the Hero Pass and the fans took to the forums and Reddit to openly bash and criticize that Jagex was ruining the MMO. Runescape players banded together and made it abundantly clear that they wanted no part in the Hero Pass and what do you know : Jagex a couple of hours ago announced that they had messed up. Jagex is patching the game back before the controversial changes that added pay-to-win aspects to Runescape. They claim they will digest the information and data and redesign and redevelop the Hero Pass to be more in-line with what the players want.

So, it appears that Runescape's plan to add pay to win has been fought by the players and the players won. The main pain point seems to be what was called Underworld Emblems and Hero Pass levels which they are removing immediately and XP Buffs will only be earnable through gameplay for all players. They are reinstating Daily Challenges and rebalancing rewards to make them easier to obtain.
Look, the fact is, every reasonable person understands that an MMO needs to make money somehow, but there is a morally just way to earn money and gain the trust of your audience and there is the wrong way. The good news here is that the players fought against evil monetization practices and they won, this is a huge victory for the Runescape players, but the Hero Pass will return, and in what form? Can Jagex actually figure out a proper way to institute a season pass system without burdening the playerbase?
The issue is that it has to be enticing enough to attract people to purchase it without harming the integrity of the game, it is a tight rope to walk : But the simple truth that everyone has been shouting from the rooftops is : Just don't make it pay-to-win : Fun? Interesting? Convenient? Sure, go with those type things.
And another thing I want to talk about is the unity of the Runescape player base who decided enough was enough and stood up to Jagex, now Jagex in the past has been the kind of developers to listen to player feedback and respond accordingly, this isn't true for many MMO developers and studios out there, but the fact that this was turned around due to players banding together and giving a resounding NO is still incredible and the kind of thing that brings a smile to this old MMO gamer's face.
Many Runescape players are demanding that Jagex remove the battle pass entirely, as they don't want the Fear of Missing Out trend to continue or be a part of Runescape. And has Runescape already tipped over into pay-to-win territory anyway? Although some players think so, I took a look and found there may be some pay to progress bonuses available, but I don't think Runescape has yet to tip into the danger zone. But, if you are a Runescape player please let me know in the comments your thoughts on the subject.
