Running Stuff on my Under-powered Laptop - CEMU 1.15.5c - Super Mario 3D World
This is something I've been wanting to do for a while, and finally can now that I have a proper capture card.
I have had a Toshiba Satellite M50-A-11C laptop since about 2014. Needless to say, that makes it fairly under-powered by today's standards, and on top of that, the fact it was my main computer before my current rig meant that it saw way more use than it probably ever should have, so not only is the battery life non-existent, but the hard drive is starting to give out, making it somewhat slower than normal when it comes to loading things.
Specs wise, it is powered by a Core i5-4200U @ 1.6 GHz CPU (2.6 GHz in turbo, which it is while running games), a NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M GPU, and 6GB RAM.
While I did play quite a few PC games of the pre-2013 era at decent settings, as well as certain emulators like Dolphin, I was curious to see how it would hold up against more modern titles and emulators.
While I do enjoy sharing the usual 4K 60 FPS footage of various games, particularly console games run in emulators, with other graphics enhancements if I can, I realise that most people won't actually be able to run games in that fashion themselves, so IMO, my videos have never served as a good reference for how well something actually performs. They are more like visual showcases that show what a game can look like if you break it's limits, pretty much.
I've wanted to be able to use some kind of less powerful rig to more accurately pinpoint performance for a wider audience. This laptop is a little TOO under-powered IMO, but it's a good reference for now so I will make the occasional video monitoring performance on it in the future. And perhaps maybe late this year or early next year, if all goes according to plan, I will be able to build a solid mid-tier rig for this sort of thing (basically aiming to get 1080p 60 FPS in as much content as possible at the lowest possible price).
Super Mario 3D World works quite well in CEMU all things considered, it holds up a solid 60 FPS most of the time, but there are still some eras, particularly World 1-5, which are too much for my laptop and cause noticeable slowdown.
CEMU's settings are pretty typical and I'm not using any special graphics packs, the game is being run at it's stock settings.
