Running Windows Games On Linux? Try VMware Player Instead!
Disappointed at the lack of support or performance in using Wine to play Windows games on Linux? Give VMware Workstation Player a try!
Wine can be a major pain to run on Linux, even when using a convenient wrapper or helper like Codeweaver's Crossover or Play On Linux. Sometimes games have critical bugs that require massive workarounds while other games simply won't work.
If you have the machine for it, VMWare Workstation Player is possibly the best choice in bringing Windows gaming to Linux. Because you are virtualizing a real Windows install within your Linux install. It's like dual booting without having to boot!
The games that I tested in this video were PlanetSide 2, EverQuest 2, and Skyrim. Both PlanetSide 2 and EverQuest 2 no longer run on Wine because of Battleye. Skyrim has a "Gold" rating on WineHQ which means it runs but requires a few hacks or tweaks to run properly. All 3 games run straight out-of-the-box in VMware.
