Rush'n Attack (NES) Playthrough
Playthrough of Rush'n Attack, Konami's 1987 side-scrolling run-and-gun game for the NES.
Rush'n Attack for the NES is a fast-paced side-scrolling action game developed and published by Konami. Set against the backdrop of the Cold War, the game casts the player as a lone soldier infiltrating enemy bases to rescue prisoners of war. The game’s military theme, combined with its high level of difficulty and straightforward design, creates a tense and challenging experience.
Armed initially with only a combat knife, the player must fight through waves of enemy soldiers, guard dogs, paratroopers, and other military threats. Occasionally, stronger weapons like a rocket launcher, flamethrower, or throwing stars can be obtained by defeating certain enemies, but these are limited in use and must be managed carefully. Most of the time, the player must rely on quick reflexes and precise timing to survive.
The level design is linear, with each stage progressing from left to right. While visually simple, the environments reflect a military aesthetic with fences, bunkers, watchtowers, and industrial structures. Enemy placement and attack patterns require memorization and quick reactions, especially in later levels where the difficulty spikes considerably.
Rush'n Attack emphasizes speed and aggression, encouraging the player to press forward rather than wait or strategize. The combination of tight controls and relentless enemy pressure creates a game that is punishing but fair. The music and sound effects are typical of the NES era—short loops and simple cues that complement the intensity of the gameplay.
Though it may appear basic at a glance, Rush'n Attack delivers an engaging arcade-style challenge that rewards skill and perseverance. It remains a memorable title for fans of classic 8-bit action games.
