ThunderJaws (Arcade) Playthrough
Playthrough of ThunderJaws, Atari’s 1990 action game for the Arcades.
ThunderJaws is an action game released in arcades by Atari Games in 1990. It combines traditional run-and-gun mechanics with underwater sections, giving it a unique identity among other action titles of the time. Players take on the role of a secret agent sent to stop the plans of a madwoman named Madame Q, who is creating an army of genetically modified sea creatures and humanoid soldiers in her secret underwater lairs. The game leans into a pulpy, spy-thriller tone, complete with high-tech gadgets and exotic, dangerous locations.
Gameplay alternates between land-based shooting segments and underwater diving sections. On land, players can jump, shoot, and collect weapon upgrades, while underwater, movement becomes multidirectional, requiring navigation through flooded corridors while fending off sea monsters and divers. The weapon selection includes a basic harpoon gun and various power-ups like spread shots and missiles, which are essential for clearing out tougher enemies and bosses. Controls are fairly responsive, though the underwater segments demand more precision, which can sometimes feel stiff or floaty depending on the situation.
The game's level design follows a two-part structure: the first part is usually an underwater base infiltration filled with traps, enemies, and destructible terminals, while the second part takes place on land, where players must make their way to an extraction point or face a mini-boss encounter. The environments are colorful and varied, with well-animated enemy designs ranging from humanoid henchmen to mechanical sea beasts. The visual style reflects the late 80s arcade aesthetic, with bold sprites, flashing explosions, and a steady stream of enemies keeping players engaged.
ThunderJaws has a straightforward but fast-paced rhythm that rewards aggressive movement and quick shooting. While it doesn’t introduce groundbreaking mechanics, its combination of run-and-gun action with swimming sequences sets it apart from more grounded shooters. The audio features energetic music and exaggerated sound effects, adding to the game's over-the-top style. Although it never reached the popularity of bigger arcade hits of the era, ThunderJaws stands out for its unusual mix of spy fiction and marine-themed action, delivering a pulpy and entertaining arcade experience.
