Russo Brothers on Next Movie Cherry
Russo Brothers on Next Movie Cherry
After directing arguably the biggest comic book of all time with Avengers: Endgame, Joe and Anthony Russo's next movie—following, I assume, a very long vacation—will be helming the true-story drama Cherry starring Tom Holland. While speaking to the directing duo at the Endgame press day, Collider's Steve Weintraub got the Russos to talk a bit about their next project.
"It's a treatise on the opioid epidemic," Joe Russo said. The film, which the Russos revealed will begin shooting this summer in Cleveland, is based on the non-fiction book of the same name by U.S. Army veteran Nico Walker. Holland will play a veteran who returns home from the Iraq War with PTSD and immediately spirals into addiction.
"It's a very different role for Tom," Joe Russo told us. The director went on to describe both Russo's personal connection to the story and the tragedy surrounding it.
"The subject matter is profound and the epidemic is staggering. We’ve had people close to us in our lives that we’ve lost due to the epidemic. It just felt like an area we were exceedingly passionate about telling a story in."
Check out exactly what the Russos had to say in the player above.
