Northeast Asian security cooperation appears to have been shaken in the last 24 hours, as South Korea announced its decision to end a military intelligence sharing pact with Japan, known as GSOMIA, or General Security of Military Information Agreement. This move comes after months of souring ties amid a bilateral dispute over trade and history. Seoul's presidential office blamed a "grave change" in security cooperation conditions - as Tokyo also cited national security when tightening trade restrictions against South Korea this summer. GSOMIA was a U.S.-backed pact aimed at streamlining intelligence sharing between two key American allies. Will North Korea and China now aim to take advantage of a new regional dynamic?
