S5E118 Puppy gotta levitate! Endless Space 2 with @nyangosling @novakitsune_ and @yukiivr_ !
0The first game I ever bought was Master of Orion by Microprose (remind me to play this one on stream sometime, it's fun and ancient but I'm good at it now XD) and it also happens to be crowned with the title of first 4x game. With MOO I found an understanding of how to develop an expanding galactic empire and research technologies to keep your faction alive and competitive with other factions out there, and that's essentially the core of what you're doing in every 4X since.
Endless Space 1 was referred to lovingly as "Space Civ" long after Cid Meier made an actual Civilization:Beyond Earth, because ES does such a good job of capturing that "just one more turn" gameplay in a way that doesn't inherently bog down the player immediately. It takes place in the Endless universe, where an ancient race that ascended beyond the physical layer left behind a bunch of high tech junk that's capable of changing the course of the future for lesser races. This Dust-tech is also used as a form of currency and crafting material for industrial works.
In game, this means you end up with a resource system that's broken down into 4 bars that are fairly easy to understand and easy to manipulate.
Endless Space 2 takes all the ideas they put in place in the first game, slaps a fresh coat of paint over the top, rearranges the tech tree drastically, and adds greater depth to the combat system with evolving tactics and hardware that can be equipped to hard-points, much like slotting weaponry and equipment into Mechwarrior or Armored Core. Initially it can feel like dropping into a pool but you quickly find that for all the glitter and dazzle, the underlying mechanics are still those base 4x standards and it keeps you from ever getting completely overwhelmed.
I'm gonna be playing this one for awhile on and off the air, it's a nice little comfort activity that occupies my brain when it's busy trying to eat the floorboards.
