All phases of Japanese tank production were extremely behind the Allies until the Japanese were forced to improve as quickly as possible.
Generally, the use of tanks was virtually nonexistent on the coral atolls and lush forests of the Central and South Pacific.
However, the Philippines would prove to be a different matter, especially on the island of Luzon.
The Japanese Second Armored Division was ordered to help defend the Philippines, a Herculean task given the enormous area, several islands, and lack of adequate intelligence regarding American intentions.
General Douglas MacArthur chose to land on Luzon in a sector very close to that where the Japanese had landed in 1941.
The &th Tank Regiment was ordered to provide support for Japanese troops already in the area to contest the American advance towards the interior of the island.
The Japanese Second Armored Division's combat manual declared that the battle in the Philippines “...will culminate in either the total annihilation of the American devils or the complete annihilation of our forces.”
