On 26 December 1944, Italian-German troops attacked the positions held by the US 92nd Infantry Division in the Garfagnana sector on the Gothic Line. It was the beginning of Operation Winter-gewitter in Italian winter storm, also called the Christmas offensive or battle of Garfagnana, the last Axis offensive during the Second World War.

It was defined as the "Italian Ardennes" presenting some similarities with the German attack in the Ardennes area, the last offensive of a certain importance by the German troops on the Western Front which took place from 16 December 1944 to 25 January 1945.

The offensive entrusted to a battle group under the command of General Otto Fretter-Pico which brought together units of the German 148th Infanterie-Division, the 4th Alpine Division "Monterosa" and a battalion of the 3rd Marine Infantry Division "San Marco", took place developed following the substantial stalemate that reigned on the Italian front after the failure of the offensives of the British VIII Army on the Adriatic sector and of the American Fifth Army in the Tyrrhenian sector.
The operation will end on December 28 after the breakthrough of approximately 20 kilometers of the allied lines, due to the lack of armored and air forces to support it. It will be one of the last Axis victories in the war and the only action conducted in cooperation between the Wehrmacht and the National Republican Army.
