Saddam Hussein's interview with Dan Rather
Amidst increasingly aggressive calls from the US to completely disarm and pretty clear threats against his regime and even his life, Iraq’s leader Saddam Hussein sat down for first interview with a US journalist in more than a decade
Rather and Hussein talked for more than an hour and highlights of the interview include:
- A denial of possessing weapons of mass destruction or breaking UN laws
- A denial of any association with Osama bin Laden
- A refusal to step down, surrender or go into exile
- He also claimed, somewhat laughably, that his armed forces lost only 10% of their equipment during operation desert storm.
Hussein also called for a live, globally televised debate between himself and President Bush with Rather as moderator.
Rather accepted but President Bush did not.
