Satazius might by my favorite doujin / indie shmup I've ever played! I started playing this game on my Steam Deck randomly while on a recent trip, and I got totally hooked.

While it does borrow a lot from the genre-defining games I know and love (such as Darius, Gradius, R-Type, and even a bit from Thunderforce), it combines them in a way that makes it very much it's own game.

The difficulty (at least on the default "Normal" setting) isn't super high, but does require a small bit of memorizing and/or routing. The weapon selection and power-up system is nice way to change up how you play the game, although I almost exclusively used the same loadout this whole run for my first time clearing it.

Recovery from deaths is handled expertly, which is something many games of the genre do poorly. Instead of taking away all your weapons or speed, you simply lose a 1/4 of your power of each weapon, including speed level.

One thing that I really enjoyed was the techno/synth soundtrack, which is pretty different most other games in the genre. The OST was redone for Satazius Next on the Switch, but I didn't like it as much as the original.

Either the Steam version or Switch port are definitely worth the asking price, especially when purchased on sale like I did (I purchased for less than 3.00 for each!). The Switch version has couple of issues, such as not being able to remap your controls, however.
