From Wikipedia/Google:
The Smith & Wesson Model 3 is a single-action, cartridge-firing, top-break revolver produced by Smith & Wesson from around 1870 to 1915.
The revolver's nickname, "Schofield" comes from Major George W. Schofield, who made modifications to the original Model 3 design in 1875.
These improvements included a one-handed latch operation, allowing the revolver to be opened and closed with ease while mounted on a horse.
The modified design was subsequently adopted by the U.S. Army and became known as the “Schofield Model 3”.
