Scud Race - Medium Course
Scud Race running on the WIP 0.3 version of Supermodel (rev 270).
Man o man, this course is tough. This is the medium track but I think it's at least as difficult as the expert one. Playing normally I cannot place higher than 7th (EDIT: since then I've managed to position 4th, but it took a lot of blood, sweat and tears, not necessarily all in that order). The threshold for screwing up a drift at speed is just so high (you start drifting too wide so you try coming off the gas just a little bit to correct it, but uh-oh, too much, the car spins out). But if you try taking things even a tiny tad slower to decrease the chance of a spin out, you won't be able to catch up with the rubber band AI cars in front of you and then you'll be watching in dismay as all the other cars you've overtaken zoom past you. But if you try going faster the chances of a spin out are increased about a thousand-fold. Arrrrghhh, dammit it Sega, would it have killed you to make the drifting mechanic just a little bit more forgiving? At least Daytona 1 & 2 got the balance right with a drift mechanic that expert players could really get their teeth into, but yet also was accessible to new comers and mid-level players as it was a bit more forgiving. And there's always Outrun 2 when I fancy doing a nice bit of no hassles drifting. Ahhh....
Also, (rant continues) as far as I can make out, the AI cars in this game are complete assholes whose sole function in the life seems to be to get in your way at the least opportune moments.
I used to have such a major chubby for this game in the arcades, because it just looked so amazing compared to all the other racers around at the time (it still does look amazing for a game from the mid-nineties), but man, I think Yu Suzuki and the other AM2 guys must've been smoking crack when they decided on the difficulty level combined with that drifting system.
I still love the Beginner day and Night Courses though. And Expert's got a certain weird charm to it as well. But bad medium course! No supper for you!
