Secrets of a 2sec F1 pit stop with Kenny Handkammer by Peter Windsor
As one of the best mechanics and then Chief Mechanics in the business, Kenny Handkammer won 13 F1 World Championships in a stellar career spanning 25 years. With Benetton he was famously on the front jack when Jos Verstappen's car erupted in flames at Hockenheim, 1994; and, later at Red Bull, he played a key role with the pit crew that broke the two-second barrier in F1 for the first time. Just as impressively, Kenny in recent years has developed a trail-blazing career beyond F1. He joined Tesla from Red Bull and today works for Lucid, in Newark, California, as Global Technical and Service Operations Manager (for both batteries and electric vehicles). Finding a short break between business trips, Kenny spoke to Peter Windsor from his home in Los Gatos, not far from the Big Sur, about the intricacies of great pit work and the challenges facing the 2022 crews as they adapt to the bigger, heavier wheels and tyres.
