Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure, developed and published by Activision for the Snes, Genesis and SegaCD in 1994 with the 32X version shown here released in 1995.

"Join Harry Jr. as he tracks an evil Mayan warrior spirit to rescue his kidnapped father, Pitfall Harry. Run, swing, skate and bungee through deep dark rainforests, raging waterfalls and Mayan temple ruins that reek of unearthly dangers... before you face the master of evil - Zakelua.
Three New 32X Levels! Now brave thirteen extreme Mayan levels enhanced with all-new 256-color graphics and the raging 32-bit intensity of the 32X!"

A sequel to the original Pitfall game on the Atari 2600 released in 1982.

The SegaCD is the best of the original releases due to additional cd soundtracks, fmv and extra levels. The 32x version includes the extra 3 levels from SegaCD version over the initial Genesis/Snes versions. The game also includes a Bonus level where you can play the Original Atari 2600 Pitfall game. More on this later.

The game is a fairly linear platformer that looks like a maze but you can really only go one way with a few levels having forks for a different route but still wraps round so you don't really miss anything. The game features some really nice artwork and your Pitfall Junior character features lots of animations which you see when dying in different ways. Music is minimal in this version and the sounds are a bit scratchy.

I'm not a huge fan of platform games in general, but this one is actually quite difficult, especially when jumping around as it feels like you are running on ice most of the time. A tiny nudge in the direction you want to go can cause a big movement on screen and get you into all sorts of trouble. This longplay is in no way a speedrun as I spend time (too long?) doing a little back tracking here and there to show hidden lives and other collectables that really don't do much except add to your score and the game doesn't even have a high score table. While I try to show everything, I think I may have missed one bonus room. I also collect all the Pitfall letters in order to show the final screen att the end of the game. A lot of effort for a whole lot of nothing. Maybe you could take a picture of it with your score and send it into Activision for an exclusive pin badge!

During the game I get to the Atari 2600 Bonus game. To keep the video flowing I cut this segment out and put it at the end of the video for anyone interested in watching that part. I don't know if it uses the original game rom wrapped up in an Atari emu or if the game was remade for each platform but I don't think the game is completable as the timing is all wrong compared with the Atari original. I try to play it through like I did with the Atari longplay but it was clear early on that I was lagging behind in this version. I throw away both lives in an effort to get back on track but by the end I was well over a minute out of where it should be. The most apparent issue is that when you enter a new pit screen, the pits are 'never' open so I have to wait it out for it to open/close before moving on. In the Atari original, pits would sometimes be open and then closing by the time you run into them allowing you to run right through the screen in good time.
