Sega Genesis Heavy Nova G1, 1P gameplay, Mission 1: all 3 training levels on Ultimate difficulty.
SSGL with Heavy Nova, a robot fighting game that I ended up enjoying. This is partially because I was unaware the game was panned, until way later on. Vid timeline:

Looking back, the negativity surrounding one's robot sluggish movement and abstract evasion maneuvers during fighting are sound. But one huge complaint, did not match with the experiences I had when I played this back in the day.
It appears most people failed to realize that pressing rapidly on the A and/or B buttons helps one stay in the fight. As a result, once unable to move but still with health available, people thought there was nothing one can do, and that it was all over at that point. That lead to people watching in agony, getting beaten by the CPU opponents!
When one is laying on the ground, unable to move due to low energy levels, rapid fire on the A and/or B buttons to "rub" one's robot generator. This will cause one's Energy Meter (divided into 7 segments) to continue to recharge even when the Health Bar is low, allowing one to stay in the fight longer.
Basically, the lower one's Health Bar, the harder it is for one's generator to keep one's robot energized. And that's where rapid firing on the A and/or B buttons comes in.
Of course, having the Sega Mega Fire (rapid fire) controller when quite a ways to keep me charged up.
I was unable to find the instruction manual on the Web. But this link has the only article that I could find that does touch on what I just explained (7th paragraph) and more:
http://www.sega-16.com/2009/08/heavy-nova/
This article explains the mechanics enough to make people aware of the fundamentals: that taking evasives (flying, crunching, thrusting) one can't regenerate. Furthermore, the lower one's Energy Meter, the move handicapped one's robot becomes. Certien moves requires a certain amount of the energy segments to be active. For example, one cannot fire missiles with four or less energy segments.
Once one gets the swing of these admittedly odd mechanics, one can start making planned fighting moves.
