2Huh. Turns out No Bombing this version is actually possible!
A while back, I was trying to NMNB stage 6, and decided to not shoot the plethora of enemies in the stage portion at all, to see if that affects anything. Come to find out, it does, not picking up items (of which there are around 600+ in stage 6, due to getting like 3 bombs) actually slows down rank increase, which is what makes a lot of attacks impossible!
As a result, not picking up items in stages makes things a lot more bearable, although it will still ramp up to "impossible" levels eventually, but dying decreases rank by a chunk.
I'm also fairly sure rank plays a part on some midboss drops. I also tried No Bombing on Easy, and to my surprise, Yuuta in stage 2, as a midboss, dropped an Extend instead of the usual bomb. Doesn't seem to happen on Normal though. Meanwhile in stage 5, Yuuta, again, as a midboss, can drop an Extend or a bomb, and I'm sure the former happens on lower rank. As such, this Extend might be nearly impossible to get on higher difficulties, since rank there is, by default, much higher.
The best way to avoid items is by not shooting enemies at all, although in some sections (namely the stage 2 spinning fucks, the stage 3 snakes, and stage 4), that will still be recommended to do. While this does make for a boring run, it's far from necessary. You can still shoot enemies and avoid their items. They do have a rather big collection radius (not to mention grazing while focused brings all of those items to you), so just try your best to not get them. I just went with the safer option. I pick my fights safely.
