One of the toughest bosses in the game (last phase Shura's more difficult imo), only because the timing on his phase 2 attacks are really awkward. A few poor deflections and I got lucky in the last phase. I shouldn't have used the axe because I almost got shot, and definitely shouldn't have used the fang and blade follow up because he usually tanks it and punishes you.

Great boss, though, and I loved the bittersweet Purification ending.

First phase: It's Genichiro, so...
The only major attacks you need to be aware of are his new Mortal Draw combat art which he always begins with (just run behind him) and his multi-hit combo which is the same as previous encounters. If you see him run in a circle around you, he'll perform a "danger" sweep attack, so be sure to jump-kick him for posture damage. There's nothing really different now, but you can be aggressive as most of his regular attacks can be interrupted.

First real phase: Against Isshin, the first thing to do is run directly at him and attack. He may begin by walking clockwise or by running at you as in the video. Whichever one he does, attack him until he deflects. He might also perform the Ashina Cross, in which case see below. But the basic strategy for this phase (all 3 phases, really) is to play it safe and attack until he deflects - usually after only one or two strikes against him. You'll then need to counter one of his many attacks.

At close-range, which is where you want to remain, he'll perform a few different moves after deflecting your attack:

Two slow vertical strikes - the first moving upwards, and then back down again for the second. Deflect both and immediately attack.

Ashina Cross: He performs the full Ashina Cross if you're at a distance. But if you run very close to him when he places his hand on his sword in the scabbard, you can deflect that easily and it'll push you back. After he does that, he'll perform a red "danger" sweep. As soon as you're pushed back, jump-kick to avoid the sweep and deal posture damage to him.

Thrust: He performs a red "danger" thrust attack, and he'll do it in two ways (both can be Mikiri countered). One is after he briefly walks clockwise around you. The other is immediately after you deflect his short stabbing attack. Just look out for the red kanji warning.

Dragon Flash: This is his wind projectile attack and there's a second delayed projectile, so wait for that before attacking him. You need to run behind him to avoid it all. It's the safest place - sometimes the shockwave can clip you even if you run sideways.

Rarely, he'll pause briefly in front of you and perform a dashing attack to the side. He does this in other phases too, and you need to deflect when you see him pose.

Phase 2 is a ball-ache. The one important tip I can give is limit your attacks to two strikes at a time, don't get greedy. Most of the time after two attacks, you should deflect and that hopefully will connect with his attack.

If you see him leap backwards, immediately deflect his spear and then run to the side as he may start firing his gun at you. Once he's done that, stand still and there's a good chance he'll perform a "danger" thrust that you can Mikiri. If you're too close, the "danger" attack will be a sweep, so beware of that.

His 4-hit combo begins at close range. He'll attack, run away, come in with a stab, a spear swipe and finally a red "danger" thrust that you should Mikiri. The timing isn't too difficult to learn for this one.

Not in the video but his other multi-hit combo is awkwardly timed, but you only need to learn the first 4 attacks. Deflect those, jump back and wait for the combo to end. Finally, a red kanji warning may appear - he'll perform a thrust that you can Mikiri. Sometimes he'll do a circular sweep instead, so jump back to avoid it.

His circular sweep has huge range but if you're close enough, stay next to him and jump-kick him when he stops gathering wind.

Phase 3 is more of the same, but with a new wind projectile attack (dodge right and then left) and lightning instead of the jumping spear swipe. He holds his arm up for a while to gather lightning - to avoid the lightning sweep, wait until his arm is about to come down and dodge towards him. To avoid the lightning vertical strike, dodge to the side. It helps to stay as close as possible.
