Serious Sunday: Degradation mechanics suck. Flimsy gear is lazy design, and could be so much better.
This week, Luke talks about a conversation he had during a party about the trend of recent crafting-centric games to have flimsy, constantly-breaking equipment, and how it's a lazy mechanic that could be easily remedied. He goes over contexts in which it serves a purpose other than to just pad gameplay and force more common resource gathering, and how in games where it is a central mechanic, how to take emphasis off of mass production of resources to keep you in tools and gear, and to turn crafting into a reward while reinforcing the exploration game loop.

Serious Sunday is a freeform, sometimes roundtable discussion between the members of Level 0 NPCs, where a specific topic is pre-selected by the group to be explored and discussed at length. Each of the NPCs approach the topic from both the perspective of a seasoned, die-hard gamer, and as creators of games themselves. Part freeform review, part critical analysis, part video game book club, Serious Sunday is where the NPCs take a step back and take a moment to give a serious look at something that is important to the industry, or games in general.
