Sesame Street: Letter-Go-Round - Version Comparison
Letter-Go-Round is a 1984 Sesame Street video game published by CCW and in 1988 by Hi Tech Expressions, for DOS, Apple II, Atari 8-Bit, and Commodore 64. The game teaches letter recognition and simple word formation, and stars four Sesame friends -- Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Grover and Bert. The game has six mini-games: Upper Case Matching, Lower Case Matching, Mixed Case Matching, One Little Word, What's Missing?, and Spell the Secret Word. In the matching rounds, a Sesame character brings a letter onto the screen. The player must match the character's letter with the corresponding letter on a spinning Ferris wheel. In the word completion rounds, the character carries part of a word, and the player must complete the word with a letter from the Ferris wheel. The game was re-released for the Nintendo Entertainment System as part of the Sesame Street ABC game cartridge. (The other game included in the package was Ernie's Big Splash). So in this video all 5 versions will be taking a look at, proving that obscure 80s sesame street games like this need more attention.
0:00 (DOS)
I stumbled across this version in 2017 when I was beginning to explore archive.org's software emulation paradise, the in-game controls were the F# keys. The music is basic due to the PC Speaker but I can forgive it due to its limitations, also the CGA actually looks decent enough here.
3:44 (Apple II)
This is the Apple II release, the music should be basic again due to the limitations, but more correct colors will be in, but however the music is absolutely terribly ear-damaging here, making this my least favorite port, however the best part of this port is at the celebration, berts first eye has black pupil, while his other eye has blue pupil, its sans boiiiiii. And it does have the most simple control scheme, relying on just Enter Space and Esc.
7:24 (Atari 8-Bit)
This version actually came with a keyboard layout, and is the better port due to faster playability and better music. However without the keyboard layout, I had a complicated time to figure out the controls since this is emulation, not the actual hardware.
11:45 (Commodore 64)
This one is similar to the Atari 8-bit port, rather than the music sounding happy and cheerful, it sounds kinda depressing due to the slower speed and pitch here. The in-game controls for me were once again the F# keys.
17:02 (NES)
This version was released on the NES game Sesame Street ABC with Ernie's Big Splash, the biggest downfall is the lack of in-game music, something the NES could've handled well. Atleast the sound is good, and Ernie appears here too.
