The axe is not a good pick for a speed run, but it is much more usable than you might think. Upgraded axe is not very good unless you're fighting the hydra in this stage or using the magic to get invincibility in stage 5. I prefer steel armor when using axe because it grants me the option to damage boost in some stages.

This is what I came up with for stage 4a. I grab bronze armor for the boss fight, since it has the chance to save a huge amount of time. I will enter this stage (stage 4) with steel armor because I damage boost in stage 3.
