So, this is the official sequel to Sega's huge arcade hit, Shinobi. Joe Musashi's back and this time he's defusing bombs and foiling terrorists with the aid of his trusty canine pal.
The game plays very much like the original in that your scour each stage for bombs and walk over them to defuse them. The main difference in this game is that you can use your dog to harass enemies, which gives you the opportunity to kill them off without them attacking. However, you have to be quick else the enemy will wrestle free and your dog will need time to recover before he can be used again.
As with the original, pressing space bar will activate your special ninja magic move, which is just a smart-bomb that destroys most regular enemies on-screen, as well as any projectiles that they had fired.
After each level, there is a bonus stage involving throwing shuriken to kill ninja jumping down levels of a building. If you don't kill all of them in time, you'll get a smelly ninja landing right in your face!
Overall, it's not a bad conversion; it's certainly very playable, which is the main point. Unfortunately, the character sprites aren't great and Joe walks like he's going for a stroll in the park instead of hunting down terrorists.
I was disappointed that there was no in-game music; I'm sure they could have managed it and got rid of the crappy pop n' squeak sound effects.
The coders got the iconic bonus stage spot on; pretty impressive for the humble 8bit machine. They even crammed in the ending sequence from the arcade version, so that was a pretty big plus considering most games didn't have an ending at all.
The game earns extra points for having a giant woman that hurls steel plated doors at you.
Enjoy!
